Larger ISPs like America Online reported that a quantity which varies from one third to two thirds of the capacity of their mail server is consumed by spam. Since this cost is now without the consent of the owner of the site, and without that user, many people regard spam as a form of theft of services. Many spammers send their messages through open mail relay UBE. The SMTP server used to send email through the internet, forwarding mail from one server to another, the servers used by ISPs require some form of authentication to ensure that the user is a customer of the ISP. The open relay servers do not check properly who is using the server and send all mail to the destination server, making it difficult to trace the spammer. |
